- Herman Being- Main character who is a personal manager for metro data processing, alum of NYU, he desires to enrich his life with classical music but can't seem to enjoy it for long periods of time or any period of time that is longer than ten minutes. Falls in love with Jean and eventually ends up getting shot in the leg by his boss (Lyall Pratt).
- Jean- Nyu graduate student that is working on her masters in music. After Herman's aunt Irene introduces them Herman and Jean end up falling in love, and plan to get married.
- Ben- A family friend and musician who helps Herman discover a true love for great classical music. He always spoke of effect which he would describe as the way music produces an emotion.
- Marvin Grossman- Herman's lawyer after he was shot in the leg by Lyall Pratt. He was a good lawyer and got Herman a settlement of $30,000. Herman also asked Marvin to set up a new business for him.
- Lyall Pratt- Personal manager of metro data processing where Herman worked. Pratt got the jog that Herman applied for and thought he would get.
- Duncan Latren- Jean's fellow student and a music snob.
